TMJ made simple

The temporomandibular (tem-puh-roe-man-DIB-u-lur) joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your jawTMJ disorders — a type of temporomandibular disorder or TMD — can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.

Frequently ask questions regarding TMD:

  1. Can TMD be fixed?

While TMD is a painful disorder that affects your day-to-day activities, the good news is a dentist CAN help to fix it. With careful diagnosis and proper treatment, we can also prevent further damage to your teeth and joints

  1. What happens if you leave TMD untreated?

Although not life threatening, if TMD is left untreated, it can contribute to significant discomfort and tension. Chronic pain can lead to the development of diseases like anxiety and depression. TMJ disorders have been linked to migraine headaches and other types of severe headaches. Frequently, the joint that connects the jaw to the skull becomes unaligned; in order to compensate, the muscles in your face, neck, jaw, and other parts of the body become stressed or fatigue.

  1. Does the night guard cover upper and lower teeth?

The night guards help in some situations to improve TMD and they are made only for one arch – either top OR bottom teeth, the size and type of night guard will have to be determined by the dentist after a thorough exam of your joint condition
